Pakistan: when floods and droughts go hand in hand. Drynet's partner SCOPE calls for international support
All provinces of the country in Pakistan are severely affected by floods after heavy monsoon rains, which started to come heavily in the last week of July 2010 in Pakistan. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has said that the disaster caused by recent floods is worse than the Asian tsunami, and the 2005 Pakistan earthquake and the Haiti earthquake. About a fifth of Pakistan territory is inundated by gushing waters. The disaster zone stretches from the Swat Valley in the north, where 600,000 people are in need of help, to Sindh in the south. About 1600 people are killed and 20,000,000 are affected. Results and lessons learned from working together in 22 countries In three years the DRYNET programme (officially entitled ‘Strengthening civil society networks to address dryland degradation and poverty issues in the context of strategic development frameworks and the UNCCD’) has achieved remarkable results. This leaflet highlights the most outstanding ones. The DRYNET programme provided a unique opportunity for 14 Civil Society Organisations (CSO) around the globe to work together to promote the interests of dryland communities and dryland ecosystems. The DRYNET network has been goal-oriented, collaborative, and bottom up. The network intends to continue to grow and to work together in the coming years. Le Sénégal, à l’instar de la communauté internationale, organise presque chaque année la journée du 17 juin, journée mondiale de lutte contre la désertification. Cette année 2010, des activités de sensibilisation ont été menées à Joal-Fadiouth et d’autres localités du Sénégal sous l’égide du Ministère de l’Environnement et de la Direction des Eaux et Forêts - Point Focal National de la Convention de lutte contre la Désertification. A Joal-Fadiouth, la journée a été présidée par le 1er Conseiller Technique du Ministre de l’Environnement et a connu la participation du Directeur des Eaux et Forêts, du Point Focal national UNCCD, des autorités locales, des représentants des services déconcentrés de l’Etat, d’établissements scolaires, d’ONG et d’associations locales.
